Posted by Aaron Bykerk on 10th Aug 2017

Candles hold a certain kind of magic and enchantment that makes them hard for us to resist. A few flickering candles can instantly transform a dull and lifeless room into an ambient retreat, or create a relaxing atmosphere that clears the mind and soothes the soul.

But with so many candles out there to choose from, sometimes it’s tricky knowing which is best! At ISHKA, we’re a huge fan of soy candles. So to help make your choice easier, we’ve outlined our top 4 soy candle benefits so you’re in the know when hunting down your next candle collection.

1. Soy candles are naturally made

Soy candles are made naturally from soy wax, a processed form of soybean oil.  Soy wax is produced by crushing soybeans and hydrogenating the extracted oil, causing it to solidify at room temperature and form a wax-like consistency. As soy wax is made from soybean oil, the wax is a type of natural vegetable oil.

2. Soy candles are non-toxic with a cleaner burn

Not only are soy wax candles a natural and renewable product, they emit far less soot than regular paraffin candles and release no toxins into the air. This soot is mostly noticeable in jar candles, but is known to stain furniture and walls in cases where candles are regularly burnt in the same area over time. Soy wax candles are a more environmentally-friendly choice that is healthier for people, and our pets at home!

3. Soy candles burn longer

While soy candles are generally more expensive, soy candles burn slower and up to 50% longer than regular candles, making them the more cost-effective option in the long-term.  Soy candles are known for burning more evenly than regular candles also (when the wick is kept trimmed to a quarter of an inch) leaving little to no excess wax on the sides of the jar.

Speaking of jars, have you noticed that soy candles are generally housed in jars and containers? This is because soy wax typically has a lower melting temperature than traditional wax blends, and is too soft to hold it’s shape like a regular pillar candle.

4. Soy candles have a longer lasting scent

As soy candles burn slower and longer than regular candles, their scent is gradually released over time, filling the room with a strong and lasting aroma. Soy candles can be fragranced using either natural essential oils or aroma compounds, or a combination of both depending on the particular scent.
