it is the pictorial objective of one’s own striving, symbol of a divine whole, facilitating awareness of the divinewithin oneself and, ultimately, realization of the deity from within one’s own self(Helmut Uhlig, Tantrische Kunst des Buddhismus, Ullstein 1981) Lord Buddha is floating above water on in a chasm of energy or viswapadmasana surrounded by 16 Arhats and 10 Bodhisattvas. This thangkas has come to be known as the Paani budda ( paani means water). It is an extremely rare piece and beautifully painted master pcs. The artist now no longer paints as he is very old now and he is a master thangka artist.
Please understand, in traditional thangka art the artist does not take any merit for the work they create as it is a tribute to the dharma and the deity they create. it is only recent requests by many from the west that thangka art be signed by the artist. Few comply, others who are strictly traditional are not able to ad to this. Indeed the odd thangka might be signed but a majority will not be. Please do not fall prey to the misconception that a piece of thangka art is worth more when signed by the artist.
