Meaning of the Mandala

'We are all one'

The mandala is an ancient meditative symbol that reveals the underlying connectedness of nature.

Found across many cultures throughout time, this mystical geometric symbol represents the all-encompassing universe and is known in sanskrit as ‘sacred circle’.  Mandalas have been used in spiritual practice for thousands of years across different religions, cultures and artistic contexts to evoke meditative and healing energies.

As circles appear in nature (eg. sun, moon, flowers), the mandala is believed to connect us to the natural world, representing unity and the cycle of life.  The sacred geometry of the mandala draws our attention inward, unifying the centre of our being with the cosmos, attracting a state of harmony and wholeness.

“All that we are is a result of what we have thought. The mind is everything. What we think, we become.” – Buddha

Mandalas are also seen to represent the human psyche and the interplay between our thoughts and reality.

Think about the Buddha quote above.  Now, take a closer look at a mandala.  The centre of the mandala represents your mind – your emotions, perceptions and outlook on life.  This energy then spreads outward to form the everyday tapestry of your world, encompassing your material reality, your interactions and relationships.

"Each person’s life is like a mandala – a vast, limitless circle. We stand in the center of our own circle, and everything we see, hear and think forms the mandala of our life." – Pema Chodron

How we want our reality to look is entirely up to us – one of the great revelations of the mandala.

This sacred circle can be seen as a spiritual guide that lights the path along the journey to our true inner self, revealing an awareness of who we are and the underlying nature of our reality. Why am I here? What is my purpose in life? Meditating with a mandala can help us to understand the meaning behind our most fundamental questions.

Through clarity, wholeness and harmony, we can begin to cultivate a new era in our reality made possible with the revelations and transformative power of the sacred mandala.

"I knew that in finding the mandala as an expression of the self I had attained what was for me the ultimate." – C.G Jung
